Featuring recent purchases (and a few old favorites)IMG_2311

Yesterday I went shopping with my sister and niece and decided to play with some new purchases. Here are the products I used and my initial thoughts on the new items.

Face

I started with Clinique Super Primer. I got this as a 100 point perk from Sephora. I’ve used a sample before and liked it so I thought I’d try a bigger sample. It has a lotion-like texture that preps the face for foundation. Then I applied Tarte Amazonia Clay Full Coverage Foundation. I wasn’t super impressed with this foundation. It is thicker than any other foundation I’ve used which made it harder to blend for me. It lasted throughout the day but clung to some dry patches I have. I then used Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer and the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Palette, both old favorites. I used Marc Jacobs O!Mega Bronze Perfect Tan to warm up the face. This is my new favorite bronzer. It gives great color without being too orange. Finally I used Laura Mercier Second Skin Blush in Lush Nectarine. This is a beautiful coral blush that lasted all day.

Eyes and Lips

For eyes, I started with my trusty Mac Paint Pot in Bare Study. I always use this as a base for eye shadows. I then used the Lorac Unzipped Gold Palette to create a gold shimmery eye. The colors in this palette are beautiful, and I’m a huge Lorac fan (just how big will be discussed in another post) but the shadows I used didn’t impress me during application. I’m definitely going to keep playing with it though. I lined my eyes with my favorite eye liner, Maybelline Master Precise, then applied Tarte Gifted Mascara. I’ve used this mascara before and liked it. It’s not my all time favorite but it’s a solid go-to. It adds length and volume without being too dramatic. I added a little Pixi Lid Last Shadow Pen in a dark bronze shade to my lower lash line for a little added definition. I finished up the eyes by filling in my eyebrows with NYX Eyebrow Cake Powder. Finally, to pull the look together, I used Marc Jacobs New Nudes Sheer Lip Gel in Understudy. I am in love with this lipstick. It is the perfect peach for spring. It goes on easy, moisturizes, and doesn’t smear.

There were some hits and misses in these new products but I’m excited about these products and can’t wait to play around even more. What new products have you purchased recently? Let me know in the comments!

My New Go-To Red Lip

After hearing multiple beauty bloggers and YouTubers rave about the Sephora Cream Lip Stain, I finally bought one in 01 Always Red a few weeks back. Last night I decided to try it out and see if it is as amazing as everyone says.

I first applied a red lip liner, Rimmel Exaggerate Full Colour Lip Liner in 024 Red Diva. I outlined the lips then filled them in for a solid base. Then I applied the lip stain. The stain set to a beautiful matte finish after a few minutes. Below is a MacBook PhotoBooth picture I took after applying the stain. (Side-note: I don’t think I’ve taken a PhotoBooth picture since 2010 until last night).

I wore this lip combo to a show last night. I applied it at about 6:30 PM and when I got home at 11:30 PM the color hadn’t budged. It lasted through 5 hours of talking, singing, and dancing, as well as a couple drinks. It didn’t leave lipstick stains on the glasses and I was surprised each time I checked the mirror in the bathroom and saw the color looked as good as when I applied it. The only downside is the combo was a little drying by the end of the night but that is common with any matte lip product.

Overall, this combo is great for when you want a statement lip and you don’t want to worry about reapplying your lipstick all night. There are few things more empowering than a classic red lip and this lip stain is the perfect way to make a statement.

My Dry Skin Essentials

Dry skin - group pic
It’s the middle of winter and that means cold, dry air that can wreak havoc on anyone’s skin and especially on those of us with dry skin. After battling my dry skin for my entire life, I’ve finally found the products that help soothe my dry skin. These products are ultra moisturizing but also gentle on my sensitive skin. I’ve found three face products, a body product, and a lip product that have helped my skin look great this winter.
Dry skin - FAB
First is my new holy grail moisturizer, First Aid Beauty’s Ultra Repair Cream. This is both a face and body lotion but I primarily use it on my face. This is the first moisturizer I’ve used that has gotten rid of my flaky skin. It keeps my skin hydrated and smooth all day and night. I use it night and day and it never feels greasy or too heavy. I currently have two back ups of this moisturizer so I never run out. It is that good.
Dry skin - oil
Now even though the Ultra Repair Cream is amazing, I felt I needed a little boost at night to really hydrate my skin. I first heard about the Fresh Seaberry Moisturizing Face Oil from Jaclyn Hill, one of my favorite Youtubers. I decided to pick up a travel size at Sephora to try it out and it has made a huge difference on my skin. I use a few drops after I moisturize with the Ultra Repair Cream each night. The oil helps seal in the moisture so that my skin stays hydrated all night. I was a little hesitant to try an oil but I highly recommend it to anyone who needs a boost of hydration.
Dry skin - Glam Glow
My last skincare product is the GlamGlow Thirstymud Hydrating Treatment. This is a mud mask that I wear overnight a couple times a week when I need a boost of hydration. The mask smells amazing, like coconut and sunscreen and the beach. It sinks into the skin quickly and I wake up with the softest skin. While you can use the mask alone, I like to layer it under my moisturizer and even sometimes also with the oil. The mask is pricey but it lasts forever and is so worth the money.

Dry skin - body butter
For my body, I like to use The Body Shop’s Body Butter. The body butter is thick and creamy and keeps my skin hydrated for more than 24 hours. I prefer body butters to lotions because they last longer and hydrate better. The Body Shop’s body butters come in a ton of scents, from fruity to floral to earthy. Keep an eye out for sales because you can almost always find The Body Shop products for half price. Last time I was in there I bought six (yes, six) because they were buy 3, get 3 free. Smoky Poppy is a new, limited edition scent that I highly recommend.
Dry skin - Nuxe
Finally, the lips. While I’m a Burt’s Bees girl through and through, I wanted something more intense to wear overnight. I’d heard about the Nuxe Reve de Miel lip balm through some British beauty bloggers and finally found it in Chicago at the flagship Walgreens. This lip balm is super thick. It smells lightly of lemon and is a little gritty at first until you rub it into the lips. It stays on the lips all night and I can still feel it when I wake up in the morning. I’ve been using this every night since June and I’m not even halfway through the pot. I’m definitely going to restock when I’m in Chicago again this summer so I won’t have to worry about running out.

These are the five products I’ve found that have helped save my dry skin this winter. Let me know if you have any essential products for winter!

PS Stay tuned for my go-to eye look later this week!
